What to Wear for a Professional Headshot (Bangalore Guide)

Your headshot is usually the first thing people see of you online, on LinkedIn, your company website or a speaker profile. Clothing is the part of the photo you control completely, so it is worth getting right. This is the advice we give everyone before a headshot session in Bangalore.

Start with where the photo will be used

Dress for the audience who will see the headshot, not for the shoot itself.

• Corporate, finance, law, consulting: a well-fitted blazer or suit with a plain shirt.
• Tech, startups, product and design roles: smart casual. A crisp shirt, a fine-knit sweater, or a blazer over a plain tee.
• Coaches, creators and personal brands: what you would wear to meet a client, with one signature element (a colour, a jacket) people can recognise.

If you are unsure, bring two sets: one business and one casual. That is what we recommend on our headshot page, and it gives you options for different platforms.

Colours that work

• Solid, mid-tone colours such as navy, charcoal, deep green, burgundy and soft blue flatter almost every skin tone.
• Avoid busy patterns, thin stripes and small checks. They can shimmer on screens.
• Avoid logos and slogans. They date the photo and pull attention away from your face.
• White and black both work, but pair them with a layer so the photo doesn't look flat.
• Think about the background. We shoot on grey and white backgrounds, so a darker or richer colour will help you stand out.

Necklines and fit

A headshot is mostly head and shoulders, so the neckline does most of the work. Collars, V-necks and structured jackets give a clean shape. Make sure clothes are pressed and fit at the shoulders. Creases and loose shoulders show more in a close crop than in a mirror.

Grooming

• Get a haircut or beard trim a few days before, not the same morning, so it settles.
• Bring a comb, lip balm and blotting paper. The studio lights are warm.
• Glasses are fine if you normally wear them. Tell us, and we'll angle the lights to reduce reflections.
• Sleep well the night before. Rest does more for a headshot than any edit.

We do not provide makeup or styling at the moment. If you want it, book a stylist for the morning of your session.

On the day

You don't need to know how to pose. We guide your posture, angle and expression, and you see the photos as we shoot.
